 Technical Information

OMEGA Inc. OMEGA Inc.has all their manuals online. Most of the manuals have very useful technical reference sections. See for example, the Temperature manual for tables of thermocouple voltages versus temperature. There is a good overview of strain gages in the Technical Reference section. See the Flow manual for a review of flowmeters.

Texas Instruments  This is a link to a Texas Instruments Application Note on noise analysis in op amp circuits.  This is a pdf file, so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.  If you don't have it, it is freely available over the WWW.  Supplied by Ciju Dhas.

Burr-Brown: Filter Pro  This is a link to a Burr-Brown web page that includes the FilterPro program and relevant application notes.  The application notes are pdf files.

http://www.globalspec.com This is a link to a searchable database of component suppliers and their products.  It has a wide range of categories of components including an excellent array of sensors.

http://www.isa.org/  This is the site of the ISA.  This used to be the Instrument Society of America, but now calls itself the international society for measurement and control.  In any case they have a searchable database on manufactureres, representatives and distributors as well as on products.

Standard resistor and capacitor values.

Active filters: National Semiconductor has an excellent application note on filters. It goes from the basic concepts of filters  through active and switched capacitor filter design and circuit topologies to a comparison of the pro's and con's of passive, active and switched filters and areas of application of each.  Texas Instruments also has an application note on Sallen-Key filters. Actually they refer to a generalized Sallen-Key circuit topology, which we have called KRC or Sallen-Key with gain. This application note contains some advice on the type of capacitors and resistors as well as the component values to use in filter designs.

Data Acquisition: Keithley has a very good white paper on common problems when using data acquisition boards. Go to Technical Support and Downloads, PC-Data Acquisition, White Papers. They also have an excellent booklet on making low level measurements, called Low Level Measurements. This deals with issues well before one is worried about connecting with a data acquisition board. This is only available in printed version, but in can be requested via their on-line literature request form. There is another booklet on general purpose measurements; however, I am not familiar with that one.

Manufacturers

Analog Devices Inc. They manufacture a variety of useful integrated circuits.

Burr-Brown Inc.  Another manufacturer of integrated circuits used in instrumentation. Not as wide a selection as Analog Devices.

MTS Systems Corp. specializes in linear position transducers based on magnetostriction. They have a good article explaining how they do this.

Pyromation Inc. specializes in RTDs and thermocouples. There is a good article in the Literature section on choosing one of these types of sensors. Also available under Downloads are RTD tables and thermocouple tables.

National Instruments Inc.  They manufacture data acquisition boards, GPIB and other interface boards, sensors, and software such as LabVIEW.
