Rankine Cycle Java Applet

This tool is capable of simulating a Rankine cycle including a single reheater and a single open feedwater heater. As the setpoints of various parameters are set by the user, performance parameters are recalculated. A T-s diagram is continuously updated as parameters are changed. Please keep an eye on the error message box in the top right corner since the calculation is not possible if the inputs are not reasonable.

Explore the following questions using the Rankine calculator.

  • How does the boiler pressure affect cycle efficiency? Why?
  • How does the condenser pressure affect cycle efficiency? Why?
  • How does superheat affect cycle efficiency?
  • How do reheat pressure and degrees of reheat combine to avoid liquid from existing in the turbine?
  • If the turbine efficiency decreases, does this make it more or less likely that liquid will form in the turbine?
  • How does extraction affect the cycle efficiency and the power output of the cycle?
