The College of Engineering Summer Study Abroad Program (May - August) is adjunct to the University of Nebraska Study Abroad Program. Students are required to enroll in the three-credit hour course offered by the University of Saskatchewan; CE 472.3 Study Abroad: European Structures. University of Saskatchewan students may receive credit for either the Open Elective or an Engineering/Science Elective in the Civil Engineering Program and the Open Elective or a Group A Elective in the Geological Engineering Program. Students not registered in the Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering programs must have their Department Head's permission to use this course for credit in their program.
More than one option of location is available to students enrolled in the program. Venue may include Italy, France, Great Britain and Brazil. Each program may be different in length and have different costs. Typical venues, lengths and costs are shown below. While the course title remains as European Structures, the location of the studies may be in other jurisdictions. The program provides students with education in the history and architecture with an engineering emphasis of Western Europe or Brazil from Roman times to the Renaissance. Students experience not only technical training but also the arts, foreign cuisine and culture. In an age of increase globalization this acquired background creates a wealth of varied experience that will assist students to function in multinational environments, which are becoming the rule rather than exception, not to mention the gains in personal growth and self-confidence. At present the cost of the Saskatchewan - Nebraska program(s) varies from US$ 1800 to US$ 4000, plus University of Saskatchewan tuition fees for one course, plus airfare, plus pocket money. Pocket money is typically US$ 500 and the airfare is typically US$ 1000 +.
