Engineering Communication Option (ECO)
Incorporate
communication skills to
your
technical education by adding the Engineering Communication Option
(ECO)
to your
B.Sc. degree (BE).
|

Design concept by
Dean Roberts, RCM 403, 2007
|
What
is the ECO?
The
ECO consists
of six courses
(18 credit units) that combine with your undergraduate degree to give
you a
specialization in communication. These
courses cover such topics as professional writing and editing, public
speaking, communication
ethics, interpersonal dynamics, leadership development, persuasion and
influence, and conflict resolution and negotiation.
Even
if you're not taking the Option, up to six credits of coursework
can be used to satisfy the "complementary studies" requirements of the
CEAB. For specific program details, check with the Program Coordinator
in the Dean's Office. |
|
Do
I Have
to Be in Engineering to Take the ECO?
The ECO is initially
available
exclusively to students in Engineering, but plans are underway to offer
the package to other academic units, such as Agriculture, Commerce,
Kinesiology, and Health Sciences. Eventually, once their college
accepts RCM courses for credit, we hope to welcome Arts
and Science students as well.

|
Why
Add the ECO to
Your BSc?
The ECO offers the
chance to build
the kind of comprehensive skill set necessary to compete in today’s
marketplace. As a technical professional, you
need
to be able to
communicate effectively with clients, the public, and various
agencies.
Enhance your attractiveness to future
employers with the specialized training in written and oral
communication
provided by the ECO.
The ECO
add-on is unique in Canada. No other university in the country,
and no other engineering school, offers engineering students the
option of adding a specialization in communication to their studies.
The ECO will give you a "leg up" with employers, who place a high value
on the ability to communicate effectively.
|
Who is Eligible?
If you have
completed second year (60 credits) in one of the eight BE programs, and have credit for RCM 300 or an
equivalent course covering the principles of
communication, you can enroll in the ECO.
While
it's possible to complete the Option in the same four
years in which you complete your undergraduate degree, most people will
find it more workable to add one
course per term in the third and fourth year of your engineering degree
and
stay on for an additional term in a fifth year to complete two
additional
courses. To find out which will work for you, and for program-specific
information, check with the Program
Coordinator in the Dean’s Office.
